Frullania cleistostoma/saxicola complex
Family: Frullaniaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Awaits phylogenetic treatment
The genus Frullania has been re-evaluated for the state of New Mexico by John Atwood of the Missouri Botanical Garden.
Frullania inflata, formerly the most diagnosed species of the genus in New Mexico, is no longer thought to exist in this state. The specimens that were formerly assigned to Frullania inflata are now thought to mostly be part of an as yet poorly defined complex of more than one species-- currently referred to as the "cleistostoma/saxicola complex." A general description of the cleistostoma/saxicola complex by John Atwood is-- "Plants complicate-bilobed, medium sized (0.8-1.3mm), dark green to brownish-green; lobe is orbicular; lobule is explanate and less than half the size of the lobe; underleaves biobed, bifid to one-half; slightly larger than the stem, margins entire; leaf cells with smooth cell walls; oil bodies 3 to 5 per cell; monoicious; perianths occur on short or long branches, habitat on bark or rocks." (thanks John Atwood & Karen Blisard!)
We first found Frullania cleistostoma/saxicola complex outside of the Gila. Those pix can be found here Frullania
