(Annual Windmills)

Allionia choisyi, which is an annual resembles the more common A. incarnata, which is perennial. The flowers and leaves of A. choisyi are all somewhat smaller than those of A. incarnata. The fruits are necessary for accurate identification. There are 4-7 teeth on the wings of the fruit of A. choisyi and they are slender. There are 0-4 teeth on the wings of the fruit of A. incarnata and they are broadly triangular. Both species have involucres that hold three pink-purple flowers that appear to be one flower. Both these species are found in gravelly areas at lower elevation.
